Claymills Pumping Station

Claymills is a unique Victorian pumping station, rescued from dereliction and brought back to life by volunteers.

After closure in 1971, the site fell into dereliction before being saved in 1993 by the Claymills Pumping Engines Trust. This channel shows the ongoing volunteer-led restoration, the engineering behind the machines, and regular public steaming days.

Claymills is exceptional because it still retains most of its original steam-powered pumping engines in their original locations, powered by the same Lancashire boilers, within their original buildings.

Built between 1885 and 1886 for the Town of Burton upon Trent, Claymills was constructed to deal with pollution caused by the town’s booming brewing industry.
